[Cwo] Awards

Whoa! Where has there been a sizably populated contest where the low-power entrant has beaten the high-power entrants? Even in your own example of SS, “very close” is not “equal” so there is still a substantial bias.

If we ever get a saturation of activity, it does not follow that high power would always win both awards. If there are 500 hundred NA participants on 20 meters during a 4-hour stint, an LP player could amass a 400 x 400 score. By not having mults be distance related, it moves the playing field closer to level. The reason HP players are winning, now, is because there are still too few participants and they can pull in more mults by using spotting and band hopping. That could all change if we start getting the numbers. So, I would not mess with the awards structure at this point. We have seen that LP players in SS CW can achieve scores that are very close to HP players, for example. It all depends on turn out.

I’m re-reading the awards for the CWO and I think we should take a second look. We give a trophy for the top score in each time period and a plaque for the top score in each power level.

Without a doubt, the high power winner will always win the plaque and trophy so the awards are tilted toward high power.

Do we award the high power trophy winner a plaque as well so they get two awards? If the winner of a category gets two (trophy and plaque) then we should award the plaque to the second place finisher in that category.

Perhaps we should reconsider and award first place in each time/power category a trophy. Second place in each time/power category a plaque. Or some other combination? I’m quite in favor of spreading the “bling” around to as many as possible.

Something to consider for 2013.
