Regarding licensing, I agree with Josh. There are several internet sites
that have good test exams and any of the study guides will have all you
need. The key is that all of the exam questions are published in advance,
including the answers! You already have a background in a lot of this stuff
so you will understand it. But with all the questions and answers in front
of you for a week or two it should be a slam dunk. By the way, the FCC no
longer does any testing. You will have to find a volunteer group in your
area (check the arrl web site for exam locations coming up).

As to the XYL, that is another story. In my case, my wife is the
"anti-ham". Someday I envision her traveling around the country and
speaking to groups in local communities and before Congress to abolish the
rights of ham radio operators and sell the converted spectrum to the
commercial interests. My attempts (over 30 years of marriage) to get her
interested usually draw comments like "are you brain dead". The ironic
thing is that I met this "kind-hearted and gentle" Japanese girl because of
my interest in Japan that was a direct result of ham radio. I met her in
Japan at a dance that some of my Japanese ham friends took me to.

I have often wondered what turned the butterfly into a fire breathing
dragon. I think several things contributed to her hate:

1. I drilled holes in the garage wall to pass through coax and rotater
cables. She felt like I was destroying her house.
2. About 10 years of extreme dxing - especially when on ssb trying to work
a new one through a big pilup she thought I was a mad man.
3. Contest weekends - she hates it when I don't spend all my free time with
her. For 30 years she has destroyed almost every contest I have tried to be
in. She will come out to the shack every 45 minutes or so and hound me to
go shopping, take a drive, play a game, or be intimate. The attack on my
time is relentless.
4. TVI - High power = pissed off neighbors=mad wife
5. Quads and verticles with radials and lots of other wires making our
house look like a house for spiders.

I love my wife so I tolerate her passionate hate of ham radio. But ham
radio is still a part of my life and I make time for it. You just have to
make time in your life for things that are important to you.

Joe

  Hi Phil,
Here's a couple of links to practice exams you can take online. These are
all the questions from the official pool. If you want explanations of the
questions, I think the ARRL books are pretty good.

  http://199.245.125.13/p/testing.pl

  http://www.eham.net/exams/

Regarding the XYL, here's what works for me. Always start out bringing up
something really over the top. It's important to sound as though nothing
could possible dissuade you. Then when you modify this to what you really
intend, she'll be relieved and let it slide.

For example, I want to put up a tower. So I explain to Tracey that what I
must have is a 150 ft of Rohn 65 and it has to be painted red and white to
look like a *real* broadcast tower. To add to the effect, I show her some
swell photos in the Rohn catalog. Needless to say she's horrified at the
concept. So now with the preparatory work done, I show up with a little 72
ft crankup. No worries.

Warning: your results may vary. Side effects may include silence, doing
your own laundry, no sex, divorce, or in rare instances death.

  Regards,

  Josh AD6XI (ex-WA6VUD)

Unfortunately, the wife happened to glance at my computer screen while I
had
it up. She did not react favorably.
