[ARDF] [Melb-ARDF] Fwd: The Case of Missing SI box 101

I pulled my Icom 706 (MkIIG) out of a storage box and tuned it around
125kHz. I was able to hear some hash when I stuck the end of the SI box
over the short antenna wire. No oscillator.

I looked at a BSF7 (new style large) unit and the crystal seems to be a
brass thing with no frequency markings. I got out some old BSF6 (old large
style) units and their crystal was 12.000 MHz.

I can hear an oscillator (BSF7) when I tune around 12.000 MHz, but I can't
be sure it is the SI box. I think it gets louder when I get closer, but I'm
not sure. I can definitely hear hash when I put the coil in the SI unit
over the short wire antenna, and I can hear hash when I punch it, but it's
not a clear, obvious indication like you get with working ARDF gear.

I took a whole box of 21 units and moved it around the little antenna but
no obvious "for sure" indication. It's probably a mistake that I have 50
units (off) about 4m away from all this.

It would be nice to verify the crystal frequency on a BSF7 or BSF8 (again,
the thing that looks like the crystal on the board has no markings I can
see).
