[ARDF] Fun and Frustration

Hi Marvin,

FOR ARDF I enjoy the outdoors , exercise exploring the woods the people
(including meeting our visitors from Europe) and looking for the controls on
(on foot) hunts.

We also have new people show up get excited ( sometimes they build
equipment) and then not return. I also don't know why. Maybe there life is
just to busy?

I have been getting frustrated with keeping hams interested in ARDF.

The latest QST has an article on radio sport. To me radio sport is running
through the woods looking for controls. In my view Radio sport is not
operating DX and eating fast food. BAD JOB ARRL.

I am trying a new path. Dumping the term ARDF and working with our local
orienteering club (using the name radio orienteering in place of ARDF).

Maybe its a long shoot and a dead end path, However my view is if something
major different is not tried soon this sport is not going to expand in the
US.

Just my soap box and 2 cents comment. I hope I am wrong.

There is nothing wrong with ARDF as defined. Its fun and I enjoy it. Look at
Europe they get good turnouts. We (the US) need to find out how to do the
same thing.

I Would welcome any new ideas from the group to attract (AND KEEP) new
people.

PS I had fun orienteering this weekend at 7600 feet above sea level in Los
Alamos. Just me, compass map and the woods. No 300 pound+ wild life
encounters of the third kind this time, unlike the one that occurred in July
at Doc Long. Sometimes That makes being in the woods very interesting.

Subject: [ARDF] Fun and Frustration

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear your thoughts about is what people find fun, and what
they frustrating about ARDF. Joe and April Moell and myself have been
putting on ARDF hunts almost every month in So. California for a number of
years now. Something I've noticed is the relatively low return rate of
newcomers.

This begs the question of why.

Your comments/thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Marvin, KE6HTS
