Well the big day, traveling to Brno in the Czech Republic to the site
of the ARDF World Champs. We got the tickets yesterday in our travels.
We had a relaxed breakfast at 8.30am, as the train wasn’t until
10.34am. I tried to do some shopping (stamps for my Nanna) but the shop
(just around the corner) wasn’t to open until 10am. We headed off at
9am and squeezed onto the already full bus. We arrived at the
international train station Southbanholph in about 20 minutes. Shortly
after arriving we bumped into (loud) Bob and Dick M50 competitors of
the US team. They were checking train times and purchasing tickets for
the same time as us on tomorrows train. We said our good byes and
trekked off in search of our train on platform 2. We stopped briefly in
the first class carriage before the conductor pointed out we had
second-class tickets. The trip of 160km lasted just 1 and a half-hours.
Jiri (a Czech competitor) and his wife met us at the station and saw us
to the accommodation and WC venue. After settling in they then took us
on a guided tour of Brno’s many sites. Brno like most of Europe has
been around for a lot longer than most countries. Many buildings,
churches in particular dated back to 1200 BC. We visited several of
these churches and even a crypt and bell tower. We arrived at the top
of the tower just before 4pm and left just after, only slightly
rattled. We had dinner at a very nice little restaurant just out of the
city center. (Marvin headed back to the Uni for dinner.) The waitress
had a go at explaining the Czech menu to us, Bob and I played it safe
with meat and chicken dishes. Bryan and Bruce on the other hand went
out on a whim and ordered the said to be nice meal on the special’s
menu. It turned out to be duck with dumplings and veggies, we all
really enjoyed our meals. On the way home we stopped at a shop to
purchase tram tickets for tomorrows excursion to the local Technical
Museum. The public transport tickets here are purchased by the minute,
10, 40 or 90 and are quite cheap (about a dollar AUD for 90 minutes).
Although Czech is part of the EU now it is yet to switch currency to
the Euro, the local currency here is krown or corona, and we get about
18 for every Skippy dollar.
