We met up with Gyuri and Marvin on arrival at Budapest airport. The van
we travelled to Pec’s in was speed limited to 70Km/h. The trip was
relatively uneventful. We arrived at our new home in Orfu at about
1.30pm. This would be our home for the next week. Unlike last visit, we
are sharing the house with the family. We are about 400M from where we
stayed on our first visit here two years ago. This house is 3 stories,
the middle level is at street level and we are occupying the top level.
This new place is a bit closer to the restaurant made famous on our
last visit. Gyuri picked this restaurant out for us as it cooks
home-style meals, we would eat at this restaurant for every meal whilst
staying in Orfu. After moving our luggage inside we went to the
restaurant for lunch. Karla, Harley, Bob (Cooley) and Vadim were
already there. After meeting and greeting we enjoyed a meal of cottage
style chips and meat. Followed by gingerbread biscuits. Gyuri arrived
shortly after 3pm to collect us for our first event. This was a short
(3km) fox-or-ing event on 80M located on the road between Orfu and Pecs
about 6Km from home. For the unaware, fox-or-ing is similar to
orienteering in that a control circle drawn on the map indicates the
location of a low power transmitter. In this case a 50M circle and a
transmitter that transmits anywhere between 10M and 60M (mostly
30-50M). I had a few problems early on (geographically embarrassed) due
to misinterpreting a track junction. I only wasted 4 minutes or so,
once back on track I moved fairly quickly through the course finishing
in 29 minutes or so. Gyuri our host finished in 20minutes but cited
home ground advantage as an unfair advantage. I did beat Gyuri between
the 2nd last control and the finish though. Bryan Bruce and I all
decided that the as the course was short (and we hadn’t exercised in a
while) that we would run back home. Gyuri had spare 1:10,000 maps of
this area so we headed off, Bryan, then Bruce then I all about 4
minutes apart. I took it easy after getting a slight ankle twist early
on in the run. Bryan and I met up latish in the later stages, we were
both looking for a minor track that would lead us down the side of a
very steep hill on the boundary of Orfu. We eventually found a
different track and opted to use it instead. The down side was that
this track lead straight down the hill it was very steep. The last 2Km
was on bitumen that lead behind the small lake and very close to the
house we stayed in last trip. Once back at home I was surprised to find
that Bruce was yet to arrive. He had opted for a riskier root and
discovered that a minor track no longer existed, causing him to
traverse the map returning instead via the route Bryan and I had used
10minutes prior. Dinner was uneventful, we did find out though that
Internet was available via Vadim’s laptop and a 45k dial up connection.
(Yippee!)
Photo’s to follow when I muster some enthusiasm. Yes my watch only says
8.40pm but my body is saying it is 4.40am
