All:
Just thought I would check in, after following these threads for a number of years.
I was a proud member of WVARC for several years. That said, I moved out of Southern California in 1971 and never lived there again. I had sporadic and infrequent involvement with ham radio over the years, but have maintained my license continuously since first getting it. I have resided in the Seattle area since finishing law school in 1976.
According to the historic records that I just reviewed (along with the fascinating photos), I see that I was actually Vice-President of WVARC back in 1969. Had I remembered this, I obviously would have listed this on the resumes I prepared over the years.
It was good to turn back the time machine and to hear from you.
.
All the best to everyone.

Well Steve, nice to hear from you.
I didn't remember all that detail about creating the photo page, except
for the part about finishing at 3 a.m. Probably why not... So anyone who
has one of those is holding a valuable piece of hand-made art!

I’m responding to John Mussleman’s post about the picture page. John and I created the page for the newsletter. My father machined a metal template with openings to create the borders around each image on the page. In a darkroom, John and I used an enlarger to expose each image on a sheet of photographic paper one at a time. I think we created a total of 20 pages. So this resulted in having to create 120 exposures. All the while we had to be very careful to remember which image(s) we exposed and to keep the sheets of paper in the correct orientation so none were upside down. The only light we had was one dim red bulb. There was no “un-do” option. Finally at around 3:00 AM, we were done and placed the first sheet into the developer solution. Slowly the images came into view. And they were PERFECT! In fact all of them were! Ah, Engineers are truly the best! :-)

Hello old WVARC friends. Long time no posts. This list is alive again.
New address for posting to this list is wvarc at lists.kkn.net.

My first Field Day was 50 years ago with WA6LXN(+WN6TLV). That's my old
call in the Novice Tent. It looks like we placed second in the country in
Class 4A. Not bad!
It seems like the WVARC club call expired 10/16/2022, according to
https://www.arrl.org/fcc/search. Maybe it's not too late to get it back,
or maybe that's no longer necessary.
Thanks for all the great memories.

Even though my WVARC days are getting a bit hazy, I'm still amazed at the
quantity and quality of ops that emerged from that tiny little geographic
spot on the earth.
And as a weird coincidence, I was perusing YouTube a few nights ago just
to
kill time and ran across "The Ham's Wide World", with the star of the
show
WB6KPN/N6PN working XE2RH. Another amazing piece of ham history from the
little club that did things!

No kidding Ken. A few of us even ended up in the communications field.
When friends or acquaintances ask how I 'got into radio' I point them to
that very youtube of 'Hams Wide World'. Actually, when they ask how I
got into studying bats (3rd career) I direct them to that video , or
"This is Ham Radio" also by Dave Bell:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuIExTh4CF8 BTW, I believe my first xmtr
(Johnson Viking II) was as chirpy as the CW at 11:55 in this video!
I recently ran across and scanned this contact sheet from 1969 or 70 ,
it includes a few field day pics (attached). I can ID most - but not all
- of the characters pictured.
And thank you Tree for reviving the list.

Hey everyone...
How nice to hear from you all again! We should take a quick roll call
and see who of us are still around.
Love the photo montage. I believe I put that together for one of the
WVARC newsletters. And I think it is posted on kkn, but I'm not sure how
to access it right off. My best guess, clockwise from top left:
Leigh, WB6OLD (then) operating a contest it appears from the stack of
sharpened pencils.
Phil Hockmeyer, WB6TVH, and me at Field Day at Rancho San Julian 1968.
My brother Jim, WB6SST at the same Field Day
Craig Olin, WB6FWC, while he was still alive and healthy
Station of Steve Mercanet, WB6FVY
Matt, WB6KPN, at his nice station where "A Ham's Wide World" was filmed
in part.
Me, at my college dorm, 1970.
This montage, and a bunch of other stuff, used to be posted on kkn. The
old link for this is
http://www.kkn.net/~tree/wvarc.jpg
but the link dunt work any more.
