Carole Olin called back this morning. She is Craig's mother.

Craig passed away about 8 years ago - just a few days before
his 40th birthday. His brother, Chris, passed away in 1998.
They both died due to diabetes. Craig has been been diagnosed
with it when he was 15.

These were the only kids in the family and Craig's dad, Don,
passed away last December. Pretty sad situation.

At any rate - Carole seemed to be pleased that we were making
inquiries. She said someone named Steve Mercanet had called
at some point.

Craig had become a radio operator on various freighters and
tankers - which now that she mentioned it, I remembered that.
I even think I remember getting some kind of card from Craig
awhile back - I will have to see if I can find it.

One one trip, I guess he went through the Southern Atlantic
and married a Swiss girl he met on that trip in '86. He had
bought a house in the country in Johannasberg (spelling?),
California. Not sure if he had any kids or not.

Carole is going to send me a picture of Craig later in life
and perhaps type up a few paragraphs about him.

She seemed surprised that Craig had this group of friends.
She didn't seem to remember very much about the WVARC.

I told her the "Craig!! Not Greg!" story - which she knew
well. I guess they were going to name Craig Greg, but there
were some other Greg's in the family, so they went with
Craig.

I am going to send her a copy of the picture we have, and
the membership list - maybe some of the names there will
ring a bell. She also didn't seem to be aware of the mention
of Chris and Craig in the boy scout publication I found on
the web - so I will send her a copy of that as well.

If you want to send her a card (which would be a very nice
thing to do) - her address is Carole Olin, 4030 West Hemlock,
Oxnard, CA 93035.

I'll post whatever she sends me. She said something about
being busy with a Navigation Contest... and she had just
arrived at home after being out of the country for a while.
