I like to pretend that I'm not old enough to forget
things like that. Matt and I spent 24 hours listening
to heavy hum levels, nasty hum levels, from his
receiver with the bad filter cap or something. By
that time his EICO 720 had blown a transformer
and he had to replace it with a lower voltage
transformer. We were running about 25 watts
input, and the antenna was a 16 foot length of
tubing with a loading coil at the base called an
18V. Compared to the 18V a Gotham vertical
was luxury at 22 feet in length. We made almost
180 contacts on CW, and our SSB station managed
about a third as many running 150 watts. Had no
tent for the CW station, and came home quite
sunburned.
