The science (and data) seem pretty clear. I suppose that one could choose to make it a “political” or emotional issue but probably a more constructive way to view it is to do what’s possible to minimize the effects of climate change (personally and collectively) and then to plan courses of action in the event that the warming (and other events) will happen as predicted. For example best current estimates are that “extreme climate” days like we’re having this week will increase from about 35 days a year in California (not uniformly distributed) to about 50 by 2050 at current course and speed. Some varieties and clones will probably do better than others in such a case. Would be good to know that. And we should probably support and develop plans to reduce the incidence of massive (and Smokey) forest fires in our AVA. (Or perhaps couple with plans for more quickly putting them out when they show up despite best efforts).

Dave Nagel

Sent from my iPhone

On Sep 7, 2022, at 3:28 PM, Jamie Kutch <jamie@kutchwines.com> wrote:

Hi all,

I have something unusual going on. Our Chardonnay appears to have ripened quickly and it is at 23 Brix now but the pH is very low for this Brix - about 3.1. My normal issue is pH too high when the Brix is around this level. Seeds are still mostly green so I
don’t believe that the grapes are ripe. There is no sign of dehydration and I watered (5 gal/vine) just before this heat wave hit. I normally harvest about a month from now.

Anybody with an idea of what is happening?

Thanks for your input.
