UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

UC SANTA CRUZ CENTER FOR AGROECOLOGY                           1156 HIGH
STREET     SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA 95064

Dear Santa Cruz Mountains grape growers, wineries and interested others,

The University of California, Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology
<https://agroecology.ucsc.edu/>is exploring the  development of an
organic vineyard and potentially a campus-linked winery where UCSC can
be the site of hands-on educational experiences and applied research to
support development of efficient and sustainable organic viticulture
techniques in coastal vineyards.

UCSC is committed to working with local communities to advance coastal
climate resilience through teaching, and research that engages directly
with adaptive management strategies in the region. The Santa Cruz
mountains have produced exceptional wines for many years without much
local research support or focused academic programming. We now have an
opportunity to build on 50 years of organic agriculture research and
practice at UCSC to create the next generation of environmental and
plant scientists and engineers who will serve local growers and vintners.

The UCSC Center for Agroecology has formed an advisory committee for
this organic viticulture initiative that includes local leaders in
viticultural consulting such as Prudy Foxx, Foxx Viticulture, and Abbey
Chrystal, Skyline Vit consulting, and Dr. Jenny Broome, Assistant
Adjunct Professor, UCSC, with additional input from others such as Steve
and Pam Storrs, Storrs wines, Steve Gliessman, UCSC emeritus professor,
Ken Swegles and Cole Thomas, Madson wines.

It would be very helpful for us to hear from you about the issues that
you find most pressing here in the Santa Cruz Mountains as we
investigate the potential for UCSC to support the incredible community
of coastal grape growers and producers. Please utilize the survey here
<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XM2P7ZT> to provide your feedback.
Results of this survey will be shared at the Dec. 7 State of the Grape
program.

Sincerely,

Prudy, Abbey, and Jenny

Please take the survey and let us know what we can work on together.
