Hi, everyone:
If you are interested in planting pollinator plants on your property,
the Xerxes Society
<https://xerces.org/pollinator-conservation/habitat-kits/california>
makes plant kits available (at no charge). At our last meeting Drew
Mather, the NRCS District Conservationist, told us about these
pollinator kits. If interested you will need to fill out and submit a
request form, due April 3, to be considered. Kits are to be picked up
mid-Oct to mid-Nov. at Our City Forest in San Jose. This kit is
especially for the Central Coast and Coastal Foothills, which includes
our region. /See the //Xerxes
<https://xerces.org/pollinator-conservation/habitat-kits/california>//website/.
"These kits are intended to be used to create or enhance monarch and
pollinator habitat on working lands, public lands, tribal lands and
private/non-working lands recovering from wildfires, with landowner or
land manager collaboration. /The kits are not intended to be used in
home gardens/. We encourage stewards of working lands to partner with
organizations or entities that can provide additional technical support
for their projects, such as l Resource Conservation Districts (RCDs),
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) or other conservation
organizations."
The NRCS can provide general technical assistance (i.e. advice) on
hedgerows, windbreaks and which plants might work best in certain areas
and which plants are more suited to certain soil types, and irrigation
for the plants. The RCD can also provide planting assistance. If you
have questions about the plantings you can contact:
In Santa Cruz County: Drew Mather, District Conservationist, NRCS
831-227-2902 drew.mather at usda.gov or Cameron McDonald with the RCD
cmcdonald at rcdsantacruz.org for planting assistance.
In Santa Clara County: James Booth, District Conservationist, NRCS
831-637-4360. / james.a.booth at usda.gov
In San Mateo County: Jim Howard, District Conservationist, NRCS

Details on the pollinator kit program are on the Xerxes

Thanks much,
