In the midst of a global pandemic and the resulting economic downturn, Gov. Newsom and the California Legislature are proposing expansion of the California Family Rights Act as part of a deal in the state budget. This will be up for a vote on Monday, June 29, so we need your engagement NOW in sending a message to Sacramento.

SB 1383 (Jackson, D-Santa Barbara) would significantly harm small employers in California by requiring all employers to provide 12-weeks of protected leave annually (for family or medical reasons) and threatening those employers with litigation for any unintentional mistake.

For employers with 50 or more employees, SB 1383 would provide for six months of protected leave for their employees.

SB 1383 is not limited in scope to only address COVID-19. If it becomes law, it will place a significant burden on employers at a time when they can least afford it. Nonetheless, the governor and legislative leaders are pushing for the Legislature to include this in the budget deal, which is due on June 30.

Contact your senator ASAP regarding this harmful legislation!

CAWG is part of a broad coalition representing several industries in opposition to SB 1383. Please contact your Senator and ask her/him to vote NO.
