VASCM: Help in Identifying This Pest

Hi Jeff,

This info is from a PhD entomologist friend. I hope it helps:

The image you sent me is of a Hemipteran, a piercing-sucking insect (not a fly). Based on the picture, it looks like a false cinch bug. (My certainty in identifications is better when looking at samples with microscope, but I am pretty confident about this one). Generally speaking, Hemipterans don’t become a big problem unless they are present in at greater abundances. It looks like this particular insect could cause problems to young vines, so I would recommend monitoring to see if they exceed an acceptable threshold, which, based on the email below, may be the case.

Here’s some more info, which includes management recommendations: http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/r302301111.html

Before becoming adults and growing wings, they inhabit the ground under dead vegetation in populations that appear like large and very energetic ant colonies. They amass on some green weeds and vine suckers that emerge from the ground. They leave a shiny resin on the suckers, which turn a bronze and whither. In some cases they get into the canopy of stressed vines where do do similar damage. Photo of adult fly:
