Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!
The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) is interested to
bring one of their sustainability self-assessment workshops to the Santa
Cruz Mountains in the next couple of months. I would like to get an idea
of how many are interested to participate in this program. Please let me
know if you are interested. I will include more information about it
below. This is a free program sponsored by the CSWA.
If we do the self-assessment workshop we would probably also include a
speaker addressing one of the chapter topics, such as soil management or
pest management. (We have already spent a lot of time last year on water
conservation).

The VASCM has done about a dozen of these CSWA workshops over the past
decade and many of our members have attended, including the
self-assessment workshop as well as programs on topics covered in the
workbook on IPM, vineyard water management, ecosystem management and
biodiversity, energy efficiency, etc. We have new members who may not
have taken it previously, or you may have missed prior workshops. There
is also a new edition of the workbook and if you participated a few
years ago you may want to go through the updated version.
*More about the CSWA, the Sustainable Self-Assessment Workbook, and the
statewide Sustainable Certification program:*
The *Self-Assessment Workbo**ok* is a valuable educational
resource. During the *Workshop* you work through it on your own to
assess your viticultural and winery practices, and in the process you
learn a lot about the recommended sustainable practices from the
information in the workbook. The CSWA will provide you a copy of the
workbook at no charge.**The Workshop can include speakers on a
particular topic.
The CSWA encourages participants to strive towards *Sustainability
Certification* based on your improvement doing the self-assessment. Even
if you are not interested in Certification the workbook is still a
valuable resource.
* You can do the self-assessment again even if you have done it
before (and especially if you haven't gone through the current
edition of the workbook).
* It is for you if you are doing this for the first time, or just
want to find out more about sustainable practices.
* Self-assessments can now be done online, and you can do the
self-assessment workshop with your laptop.
