Hello, everyone:

We have a change on the Board to announce. After five years on the Board
and her valuable contributions to the Association (which we hope she
will continue to make), Rachel Ormes is leaving the Board; and Ken
Swegles has agreed to join the Board as Vice President.

*Rachel Ormes* has served on the VASCM Board as Vice President since
2010, and now has decided to move on to explore new pursuits. Rachel has
had a lot of great ideas for programs and other projects, and has been a
great contributor and supporter of VASCM. Rachel became involved five
years ago as vineyard manager at Vine Hill where she implemented organic
certification and promoted sustainable practices. More recently she has
refurbished a vineyard along Branciforte and sold its first crop this year.
Some of you took Rachel's viticulture class last year at Cabrillo,
which she will teach again next time it is offered. Rachelappreciates
the vineyards that opened their doors to the class and hopes to continue
those field trips in the future. She is also starting a farm to table
series next year focused on an educational and tasting menu and would
like to continue to network with interested vineyard owners to host pop
up events at different locations. You will still see Rachel at VASCM
meetings, so this is not good-bye. Thank you, Rachel, for all your work
and contributions!!

We welcome *Ken Swegles* who has agreed to join the Board as Vice
President. Ken is a vineyard manager at Coastal Range Vineyards
<http://coastalrangevineyards.com/>, and most recently was assistant
winemaker to Jeff Emery, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, working both in
the cellar and in the vineyard. Ken has broad experience and perspective
on our region and its vineyards, and brings some good ideas for new
programs that you will start to see in the coming months.
Ken graduated from UCSC with a major in Environmental Studies. He
has worked for the Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works as a GIS
technician mapping water ways in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He has been a
harvest intern at Byington Winery, worked for a small family vineyard in
Zayante, and at David Bruce Winery (where he worked with vineyard
consultant Mark Greenspan). Then he worked for Williams Selyem for a
couple of years where he became knowledgeable about other regions, and
returned to the Santa Cruz Mountains in 2012 to work for Rhys Vineyards,
then for Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard before recently joining Coastal
Range Vineyards. Coastal manages almost 100 vineyards from Corralitos to
Branciforte to the Peninsula.

We wish Rachel well in her new endeavors. And welcome Ken to the Board.
You will see both at our upcoming meetings.

Regards,
The VASCM Board:
