Red Blotch has been reported in a few of our local vineyards. And
nursery stock coming in to our region has been tested positive for Red
Blotch. This may have seemed like a distant issue, but it has come
closer. If you haven't already you may want to find out more about this
virus.
In an article in Wine Industry Advisor earlier this week, Judit Monis of
STA Labs in Gilroy provides some details, including:
- Presently there is no information on the natural transmission of GRBaV
other than *it is graft transmissible and propagated with infected
rootstock and scion cuttings*. While there are anecdotal reports that
GRBaV is spreading rapidly throughout California vineyards, there is
limited field data supporting this viewpoint.
- The virus is associated with the presence of red, blotchy leaves and
reduced sugar content in red fruited grape varieties. And also affects
white grapes.
- It is likely that Red Blotch disease was confused with other grapevine
disorders that manifest similar symptoms. These disorders include
infection by leafroll viruses or fungal pathogens, insect feeding
damage, vine nutritional deficiencies, environmental stresses, soil
conditions, physical damage, poor vineyard management, etc.

And below is information about a free webinar on Aug. 20.
*Upcoming VASCM Meeting:* We are planning a VASCM meeting in August
(hopefully before harvest starts) on “Diagnosing Grapevine Canopy
Symptoms” (date and location TBD). Larry Bettiga, UCCE Farm Advisor,
will address the identification of a range of canopy issues including
disease (virus, fungal), pest, nutrient deficiency, etc. More
information will be forthcoming.
Cheers!

Update on Grapevine Clean Planting Stock - Diseases of Concern
Presented by Judit Monis, Ph.D., Plant Health Services, Eurofins
STA Laboratories
The California Grapevine Registration and Certification (R&C) Program
was revised in 2010. The regulations, coined as “Protocol 2010,”
include specific rules for traceability, distance of increase blocks
from commercial fruit-bearing (non-registered) vineyards, and disease
diagnostic with vines propagated using a tissue culture technique with
the aim of eliminating harmful viruses. The webinar will discuss
details of the “Protocol 2010” disease testing and provide an update on
the recent discussions to include /Grapevine red blotch associated
virus/ (GRBaV) in the California R&C program. Furthermore, we hope to
highlight the need for growers and nurseries to develop routine testing
programs to complement the current and future R&C diagnostic programs in
order to avoid the potential transmission and spread of pathogens.
