The next VASCM meeting is a tailgate at Steve and Pamela Storrs'
vineyard and new winery in Corralitos:

Saturday, May 9
9:00am-12:00
1560 Pleasant Valley Road, Aptos

The Storrs will give us a tour and talk about their vineyard practices
and new winery building, including erosion control and runoff measures;
hedgerows; wildlife corridors; sheep grazing; energy conservation; and
more sustainable and other practices. The new winery has not yet opened
but will soon, and we will get to enjoy this preview. The walls of the
winery are two feet thick and constructed of soy-based foam insulation
and concrete. Rich Casale of the NRCS will talk about the role of the
agency in implementing many of these practices through technical advice
and financial assistance through its EQIP program.

Then, we'll get a drone flyover of the vineyard with a video demo
provided by Kevin Monahan of Video 4. Growers are using aerial images
provided by drones to view and track vineyard development and
differences caused by nutrients, water, pests, etc.

For those who want to continue to visit and get some lunch, we can do so
informally at the Corralitos Market nearby (569 Corralitos Rd.).

Then, look forward to a couple of additional meetings coming up:

- End of May: Dr. Stuart Weiss, Viticision <http://www.viticision.com>,
climatologist and conservation biologist, will speak about making
adjustments in the vineyard (to row orientation, canopy management) for
improved grape quality, and how our vineyards may be affected and
adapted in the face of changing climate.

- End of June: Joint program with Community Alliance of Family Farmers
(CAFF).

See you on the 9th at Storrs.

Regards,
The VASCM Board:
- Mary Lindsay
- Rachel Ormes
- June Salsbury
