The local NRCS office (Natural Resources Conservation Service) provides
technical assistance free of charge that can be of great benefit to
growers.

In addition, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
provides financial and technical assistance to help agricultural
producers with natural resources projects. EQIP applications will be
received and reviewed on a continuous basis until July 17 of this year.
Numerous VASCM members have benefited from this funding under the EQIP
program. Local vineyard projects have included erosion control,
rainwater collection systems/water harvesting; hedgerows; ponds and
spring development, nutrient management, pest management, irrigation
improvements, cover crops, road seeding, invasive plant removal, gully
control, subsurface drainage, etc. So if you have a project along these
lines you might want to consider this funding support.

EQIP is a voluntary program through the NRCS (Natural Resources
Conservation Service). The NRCS is a non-regulatory agency under the
U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is not a reporting or enforcement
agency, and everything is confidential. The purpose of the program is to
provide assistance supporting environmental quality. Technical
assistance is provided free of charge.

The first step, whether you are interested in getting technical advice
or in the EQIP funding, is to schedule a property visit with the local
NRCS representative to discuss what you would like to do, objectives,
resources and conservation alternatives. In our area that is Rich Casale.

More information about EQIP and how to apply can be found on the NRCS
website here
