Hello, everyone:

Tom Shapland of Tule Technologies spoke to us last week on Surface
Renewal ET. A number of people requested a copy of his presentation,
which you will find in a Dropbox folder (click here
<https://www.dropbox.com/home/Tom%20Shapland%20on%20Surface%20Renewal%20ET>).

In a nutshell, surface renewal ET measures the amount of water loss from
your vineyard due to sunlight/solar radiation and wind (air flow),
giving you actual data upon which to make irrigation decisions,
according to the parameters you set for your site, conditions, and
goals. Results from the instrumentation show you when ET drops as the
plant uses available water, and it rises as moisture is replenished
(through irrigation, rainfall, humidity) or as the vineyard's water
needs are reduced. Whether or not you irrigate, you will have a more
accurate measurement of your vine's water use and deficit stress level.

Here are a few interesting factoids that came out of the presentation:
- vines can transpirate as much as 25 gals/day
- 1" of rainfall = 27,000+ gallons/acre
- max. vineyard water needs are at the summer solstice, when the days
are longest (heat is not as much of a factor as is number of hours of
daylight).

Thank you to Nathan Kandler, Michael Martella, and all the folks at
Thomas Fogarty who helped make this meeting possible.

Regards,
Mary Lindsay
