VASCM: Grafting Tailgate June 12 at Muns Vineyard

Hello, everyone:

A few months ago we promised a tailgate on how to graft, to be scheduled 
in June. If you collected your bud wood and have had it in your fridge 
all this time, you will soon get to work with it.

Grafting Tailgate

at Muns Vineyard (directions below)

Ed Muns has been grafting successfully in the vineyard for the past few 
years and will demonstrate how he does it. There are a couple of steps 
that require practice and one of them is slicing the buds from the bud 
wood stock. If you would like to practice that and get feedback, bring 
some of the bud wood you saved earlier in the year, along with a 
grafting knife - you can practice slicing off the buds on your own 
cuttings. If you don't have cuttings you saved, or recent prunings (that 
might work for practice), then come anyway and you will see how it is done.

After the demonstration we can visit in the vineyard for awhile, for 
anyone who would like to stay. Bring a bottle of wine if you'd like and 
we can share some wine among the vines. We will provide some cheese and 
bread.

Also, about VASCM meetings: we had a meeting planned on the geology and 
soils of the SC Mountains, which would have happened last week, and at 
the last minute, just as we were ready to announce it, the speaker had a 
family emergency and had to cancel. We hope to reschedule this meeting 
in the future. But in the mean time, we lost this opportunity for a 
speaker and are working now on another one.

Directions to Muns Vineyard:
25600 Loma Prieta Ave., Los Gatos

 From Hwy. 17 coming from Santa Cruz:
1. Take the Summit Road off-ramp from Highway 17. Continue straight 
ahead onto Summit Rd. and drive
east for 3.2 miles to Loma Prieta Avenue.
2. Make a left on Loma Prieta Ave. (just past Burrell School), and pick 
up on the directions below
starting with **.

 From Hwy. 1 and Soquel:
1. Take the Porter Street/Bay Avenue exit from Highway 1 and drive north
(becomes San Jose-Soquel Road) for 10 miles to Summit Road, turn left (west)
and go about 0.3 miles to Loma Prieta Avenue.
2. Make a right on Loma Prieta Ave. (just past the Summit Store).

**Then:
2.  Drive on Loma Prieta Avenue for 3.3 miles. You will pass through 
pear orchards
and past the house with the vines at the s-curve the road will narrow. 
As you drive up
the hill you will have a fabulous view looking out over Monterey Bay. 
Just drive carefully.

3. At 3.3 miles you will come to a Y in the road with an address post 
showing
25200, 25300 and 25600 (and a row of mailboxes).  Take the left-hand leg 
of the Y
which is our private road. Follow the pavement and continue uphill).  Do 
not take the right
leg of the Y here - it continues on Loma Prieta Avenue and turns to 
dirt, so be sure you bear left up the private road.

4.  A couple hundred yards past the 1st Y there will be a 2nd Y with a 
gravel road
branching off to the right.  At this 2nd Y, turn right and go another 
couple hundred yards
to our gate. You will see the vineyard. Park along the road just inside 
the gate.
