The 64th ASEV (American Society for Enology and Viticulture) will be
held June 24-28, this year in Monterey.
The program includes a Rootstock Symposium, and a Symposium on Tannins,
as well as other industry presentations. You can see the complete
program and registration details at asev.org.
Please note that the VASCM is planning a program on water use and
conservation in the hopefully next couple of months. This will include
clarification about the Central Coast Ag Waiver which is currently being
implemented, and its implications for everyone. Some of you in the
watershed feeding Monterey Bay may have already been contacted by the
Water Board about this waiver. More about this later.
More about the ASEV Conference:
The Rootstock Symposium on Tuesday will address every aspect of this
vital topic with a strong panel of international speakers addressing the
physiology, breeding, evaluation and performance of grapevine rootstocks
throughout the world. Presentations will include focus on the
physiological mechanisms responsible for rootstock pest, disease and
stress resistance, the direct and indirect effects of rootstocks on vine
physiology and fruit and wine composition, current rootstock use and
adaptation, the resistance of traditional and newly released rootstocks
to specific nematode species and host-races, rootstock genetics and
breeding, rootstock x scion interactions and rootstock implications for
vineyard design.

The Tannin Symposium on Friday will provide an update on recent
technical progress on grape and wine tannins. This symposium will offer
a broad range of interest to members of our industry and academia with a
number of speakers internationally recognized for their work. The last
time a symposium on this topic was held was at the ASEV 2006 national
conference held in Seattle, WA.
The symposium will include a brief overview of tannin chemistry to
provide the audience with a fundamental understanding of the chemistry
of these compounds and the format of the presentations. The vineyard and
winery management of tannins with a particular focus on practical
aspects will be addressed. A panel consisting of winemakers and growers
will provide input with several keynote speakers. The novel aspect of
this symposium is the inclusion of a "Mysteries of Red Wine Tannins"
portion that was created to allow the audience to learn about the
current challenges of tannin chemistry and how these problems are
changing winemaking and viticulture practices.
*Note: you must be 21 or older to register for this symposium.*
