VASCM: Cluster Thinning

Thanks for the great article TG. It really illustrates the many perspectives on this topic.

In my experience, fruit thinning is incredibly site specific and depends on numerous factors including age of the vine, clone, variety, soil and climate conditions of year and site…… on and on. Often young vines in their newly formed exuberance tend to set way more fruit than they can adequately ripen. In a good year the grower will ripen that fruit but at the expense of root growth. This may compromise future yields for years to come.

Like so many aspects of viticulture there is no one formula to fit all situations. Older vines tend to be more stable.
