Pruning Tailgate with Rachel Ormes

Where: The old Roudon Smith vineyard at
466 Blue Jay Lane, Santa Cruz (in the Happy Valley area - directions below)


This is an informal tailgate session on making pruning and training 
decisions.  This vineyard (the old Roudon Smith vineyard) is an older 
one, planted some 40 years ago to Chardonnay and Pinot (about 3 acres).  
It has suffered from neglect and deer depradation. Rachel has been 
working with it over the past couple of years, re-establishing shoot 
positions and grafting.  You are invited to join Rachel in the vineyard 
while she discusses and demonstrates the decisions she makes while she 
cleans up the shoot positions and decides whether to train recently 
grafted canes onto the cordon or prune them back to two buds.

This is a good opportunity to learn more about pruning and training, 
whether your vineyard is a challenging one like this one or not, or 
whether you are just getting started. The vineyard was planted in the 
old California sprawl style. There are no trellis catch wires, but it is 
being pruned in VSP style and should serve as a good example that you 
can apply in your vineyards.

466 Blue Jay Lane, Santa Cruz

 From the Old San Jose-Soquel Rd:
- Turn onto Laurel Glen (at Casalegno's)
- proceed up Laurel Glen and make a left on Mountain View Rd.
- about 1/4 mile past St. Clare's Retreat (you'll pass No. Rodeo Gulch 
on the left), make a right onto Blue Jay Lane; drive to the end
- if you get to Vine Hill you've gone too far

Or, you can come from Hwy. 17
- exit Vine Hill
- come all the way down the hill; Vine Hill will intersect with 
Branciforte; continue straight ahead on Branciforte
- make the next left on Mountain View
- go about 1/2 mile and make a left on Blue Jay Lane; drive to the end
