Hi Jeff,
As always, there a trade offs to every decision in viticulture. Cane pruning is really successful in some sites with some varieties. I have seen cane pruning make a significant difference in quality and tonnage and I have seen it make no difference at all.
I think the decision is site and clone specific and also relevant to your vineyard history.
Certainly cutting off the cordon every year may reduce the chance of Eutypa spreading but it also opens up wounds in the wood that may provide entry points for new infections.
Just some more thoughts on it.
