2011-12 Wine Flavor 101D: Impact of Vineyard Management Practices on Wine
Composition
Save the Date: Thursday May 10, 2012
When: 9:00am to 4:15pm
Where: Freeborn Hall at UC Davis
The latest in our 2011-12 Wine Flavor 101series, entitled "Impacts of
Vineyard Management Practices on Wine Composition" will highlight several
key vineyard management strategies and how those strategies are thought to
affect resultant wine composition. We'll begin with an overview of vineyard
management practices, including which practices are most effective and also
cost-efficient, from Dr Nick Dokoozlian, the widely-recognized authority on
this topic. We'll discuss a 2011 leaf-pull trial on Sauvignon blanc that
was a cooperative effort between Trinchero Family Estates and UC Davis, and
taste through the results of that trial. The morning program will conclude
with an update on our Zinfandel Heritage Vineyard, established in 1989, and
conclude with the first public tasting of several of the clonal selections.
The afternoon program will be led by Dr Alain Deloire, Chair of the
Department of Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University in South
Africa. His research focuses on berry maturation and grape physiology. He
will discuss 2 issues: 1) berry sugar-loading, including a tasting of wines
from his research, and 2) optimal ripeness, which will also include a
tasting of his research wines.
Remember: these classes are targeted specifically to wine and winegrape
industry professionals and, as such, are technical in nature. The
information discussed is much the same as that presented to students
enrolled in the V&E program at UC Davis, and assumes the registrants have
some experience with wine and winegrape chemistry. Register early as these
classes have been very popular and often sell out before the event date.
