Thank you to Greg Jenkins for forwarding the following December
newsletter from the Pierce's Disease Control Program. The PDCP is under
the California Dept. of Food & Ag, and you can find the website at
http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/pdcp/ .
Greg contacted the CDFA to find out more about "the eradication of GWSS
infestations in Santa Clara County" mentioned in this newsletter, and
has shared the reply, which is included at the bottom of this message.
Just in case you didn't know that the GWSS had gotten this close.
If you are interested in receiving the PDCP newsletter, I would email
pdcpinfo at cdfa.ca.gov <mailto:pdcpinfo at cdfa.ca.gov> and request it. I
don't see a convenient link to it from the home page.

What We Do in the "Off Season"
The PDCP is a year-round program always working to protect California's
vineyards from Pierce's disease. During the warmer months, the PDCP is
kept busy with field activities, but when the weather cools down,
there's still plenty to do.
The "off season" entails a great deal of work reviewing and updating
protocols and informational materials, maintaining colonies of
glassy-winged sharpshooters and parasitoids, conducting maintenance and
repairs on equipment and facilities, planning and completing contracts,
preparing the Annual Report to Legislature, soliciting and reviewing
research proposals, and putting together the annual research symposium
and proceedings.
The PDCP is working hard year-round. Learn more about the PDCP's "off
season" work in the winter newsletter, coming soon.
GWSS Eradication Success
The GWSS infestations in the Branham and Evergreen areas of Santa Clara
County were declared eradicated as of
December 2, 2010. This makes a total of four incipient infestations
eradicated in Santa Clara County and 15 program wide since its inception.
2010 PD Research Symposium
The 10th annual PD Research Symposium took place December 16th and 17th
in San Diego. The symposium welcomed 120 attendees each day to hear the
latest in research from scientists around the world. Read more about the
symposium in the upcoming winter newsletter.
Regulatory Nursery Program Update
>From January 1, 2010 through October 31, 2010, there were 49,960 nursery
stock shipments from GWSS-infested areas to non-infested areas of the
state.
Year to date, six regulatory actions have been taken by destination
(receiving) counties due to viable GWSS life stages being present. Each
of these finds resulted in the issuance of a Notice of Rejection.

Hello Greg,
Thank you for your inquiry into the recent eradications of the
glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) in Santa Clara County.
GWSS was first detected in the Branham area on a trap in 2001. The most
recent GWSS find was in August 2007. Foliar and systemic ground
treatments were conducted on and around the infested properties with the
insecticide Merit. These treatments decreased GWSS populations
significantly. GWSS was found on only six properties in 2006 and 2007.
GWSS was first trapped in the Evergreen area in July 2006. After foliar
and systemic ground treatments were done using the insecticide Merit in
2006, GWSS was found on only three additional properties through 2007
and 2008.
We work cooperatively with the Santa Clara County Agricultural
Commissioner's office who administers the Pierce's Disease Control
Program in the county. Thorough monitoring of traps and surveys by the
Agricultural Commissioner's office the last few years revealed no
additional GWSS in the two areas and we were able to declare these two
areas eradicated.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.
Thank you & Happy Holidays.
