VASCM: [santacruzmountains] SCM/CC appellations

Hi everyone,

This flurry of e-mails has been educational and entertaining. I guess I should chime in on this a little bit too.

I get the feeling that maybe the purpose of this proposal is a little misunderstood. This proposal has nothing to do with a loss of identity or diluting what is unique about the SCM region. The SCM appelation is hugely diverse from one end to the other, from soils, elevation, exposure, etc., and I'm all for continuing the goal of identifying and preserving these micro-climates. The addition of the sub-appelation of, "Ben Lomond Mtn." to the SCM ava, is a good example of that.

Adding the SCM to the CC ava doesn't affect this at all. To me, it's really only a marketing tool for winemakers blending wines from grapes around the Central Coast. If your SCM winery doesn't do that, then this proposal won't even matter to you. Our winery has been producing SCM wines for 24 years, and I can't think of a single wine that we would've needed, or even considered, to label "Central Coast".

Here's one more point to consider in favor of  adding SCM to the CC ava,
For the good of all of us, we want/need to put our best foot forward when representing our region with a SCM wine. I suspect you would never even consider blending out your best quality SCM wine with other CC blenders, so this may actually help keep SCM labels off subpar wines.

Happy Holidays to all,

I just want to say that I think this has been an excellent online
discussion (John Bargetto's proposal re: the Central Coast). John asked
for feedback, and we've heard many arguments pro and con. Everyone on
this list has been given the opportunity to voice their opinion. I,
personally, have been interested to hear what people have to say.
Whether you agree or disagree with the proposal, I think this has been a
valuable forum.

This is not going to be decided by email, though. John is forming a
working group to further explore the issue and they will undoubtedly
take into account the input received here. I am sure we will be hearing
more about it in the future.
