VASCM: confused about appelations

My background is biogeography (PhD), not viticulture (1.5 yrs hands on experience).  I have strong feelings about truth in labelling.
Call my location south Corralitos, where Santa Cruz abuts Santa Clara and Monterey . . .  650 to 704 feet.  Not clear to me whether I'm closer to various versions Central Coast or to Bonnie Dune and Summitt.  I'd say it's all some shade of grey, but there are some areas to the south that are more like my vineyard than northern, higher elevation areas in SCM.
I listen to NPR a lot, and from a marketing perspective I sometimes wish I could ally my marketing to Monterey Co. rather than Santa Cruz Co.
So if there's a way to leave ourselves freer to choose who we associate with . . . according to who we are most like . . . I'd vote for it.
