Hi John -
I think this is a very interesting proposal, and one that should definitely be vetted out thoroughly. The ultimate goal here is to do the best thing for our AVA and all of the wineries and vineyards within.
I think the initial reaction for most people will be negative, simply because they will assume that being associated with the Central Coast AVA will bring down the value or perception of our AVA. For example most people do not realize that the North Coast appellation includes 2 of the most well known counties in California, Napa & Sonoma, was well as Mendocino, Lake and Solano counties. I don't think we should assume that belonging to a larger AVA will necessarily bring down the value of an individual AVA, but can actually bring more recognition to smaller lesser known AVA.
Positive Things to consider:
SCM AVA is NOT always included in publications, articles and maps that INCLUDE the Central Coast AVA - we get by passed. We all know that the AVA could use all the marketing opportunities that we can get.
Robert Parker actually requests samples by these larger designated AVA's - North Coast, Central Coast etc… they are recognized.
Belonging to the Central Coast AVA does not mean that the SCM AVA changes - in any shape or form. We continue to produce quality fruit and wines that express the terroir of our AVA.
It would allow blended SCM wines to use the "Central Coast" AVA rather than "California" - which, from a marketing stand point is much better.
The Central Coast is becoming more and more well known for it's wines - it has a broad reach to a wide audience - this is what we need.
Negatives:
If we are part of the large Central Coast AVA - does this affect the perception of the quality of wine or fruit from the SCM?
Would the cost of fruit go down, the price of wine? (not the case for Napa or Sonoma, wine and fruit quality stand alone, based on what is actually being produced from those regions).
Others?
I would be a willing person to serve on a committee to further explore this idea - pro's and cons,
Lore James
