VASCM: [santacruzmountains] SCM/CC appellations [1 Attachment]

HI everybody, I hope your holiday season is allowing time to recharge for next year!
John has opened an interesting debate. It seems the most important thing we can do at this point is to clarify who we are and what makes us unique. While it is true that the SCM AVA is incredibly diverse there is an underlying geologic explanation for what brings us together and makes us unique as a geomorphic community distinct from the Central Coast, and other nearby AVA's. I went to my geologist friends for an exact explanation of what makes the Santa Cruz Mountains unique.
In most simplistic terms, the Santa Cruz Mountains were created by the collision of the North American plate and the Pacific plate. And while this occurs up and down the California coast the bend in the fault line where we are has made our soils and our geography who we are. For a more technical explanation you can read the interpretation below.
While soils vary and microclimates abound, no where else on earth is like the Santa Cruz Mountains. We are a dynamic environment full of fault lines, hundreds of individual tiny mountain tops, and marine influence. Not to mention the unique and independent spirits that have chosen to make this their home.
I guess you could say, "It's our own fault" . I can't resist the pun.
Let's keep up the conversation. I think it may help us to all work together even more for the common success of our region.

The Santa Cruz Mountains are largely the result of compressive uplift caused by a leftward bend of the San Andreas Fault, which is the boundary of the North American plate and the Pacific plate of the earth's crust. Rapid tectonic uplift and numerous smaller fault zones have created a geomorphically young environment with steep slopes and deep narrow valleys. Large variations in the underlying geology (granitic, sandstone, mudstone, and colluvium) in combination with varying slope direction and steepness result in soil composition and thickness varying widely across Santa Cruz Mountain micro environments. Orographic lifting of rain clouds coming onshore from the Pacific Ocean causes annual rainfall to vary from 20 to even100 or more inches in some years, which further influences these micro environments. These conditions make the Santa Cruz Mountains unique and allow vineyard sites for growing premium wine grapes to be selected that can not be found in other areas.
