VASCM: [santacruzmountains] SCM/CC appellations [1 Attachment]

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately I could not read the document (file format incompatibility) that
was attached. I understand from John's e-mail that he would like to see the
Santa Cruz Mountains AVA incorporated as a sub-AVA of the Central Coast. I
understand he has provided a rationale and proposal to do so.

I disagree. It would be similar to Sonoma asking to incorporate itself into
Napa. The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA produces a small amount of wine. The Central
Coast produces a voluminous amount of wine. The vineyards of the Santa Cruz
Mountains are difficult and expensive to grow and maintain. They produce fruit
that becomes truly distinctive wine. The attributes of our AVA wines including
spice, acid and tannins are not found in many other locales. Why would we wish
to become part of something less unique? The incorporation of our AVA into
something larger would dilute what we are trying to do. The efforts of our
predecessors in establishing the SCM AVA in the first place would be for naught.
Santa Cruz is special. Santa Cruz is not the Central Coast. The winemakers of
Santa Cruz also bring "terroir" to the wines that are produced. I believe that
terroir is not only the land and the climate but it is also the collective
culture of the winemakers that produces the wine. Our productions are "small
lot" productions. Our producers, by and large, produce less than 10,000 cases of
wine each year. Not only do I not wish to participate in diluting our heritage,
I want to promote our uniqueness. That is what Pinot Paradise is about. That is
what our Pinot noir technical group was established to do.

As we move forward in these difficult times, we are not always in agreement but
I think we understand that we are together in this. With many moving parts it is
difficult to always find common ground but let us continue to focus on what
makes us special.

Merry Christmas and warm regards,
 Nick Guerrero

I agree with those who oppose this proposal. Our biggest challenge in marketing
is separating our wine
>From the crowd. SCM is unique and I believe this proposal would weaken
A marketing feature that sets us apart.
