Hi, all:

We've got a tailgate session for you, for those interested who can make it:

Tailgate this Tuesday, 10-11am with Tony Craig on fruit ripeness and
flavors for harvest - at Muns Vineyard (directions follow)

Tony Craig will be walking the vineyard at Muns Vineyard this Tuesday
for a final inspection prior to harvest (scheduled to start the next day
at Muns), and has agreed to talk about what he looks for in fruit
ripeness, flavors and overall readiness for harvest. Tony has worked
with numerous vineyards throughout Northern California and with numerous
winegrape varieties in his capacity as winemaker and will share his
expertise and opinion on when fruit is optimum for harvest. As well, Ed
Muns can talk about the site specific canopy management practices in the
vineyard.

I apologize for the last minute notice, especially over the holiday
weekend - this has only just been pinned down with Tony's availability,
which is not much, given that harvest has started and it's great that he
is willing to do this.

Please note: this is not the usual VASCM meeting. We will not be
providing food or doing our usual wine tasting. I don't believe we have
done a tailgate in recent years, but the opportunity presented itself
and it seems a good idea, and hopefully there will be a group who can
make it. The only notice will be by email, so if you know someone you
think might be interested, please give them a call.

We had hoped to schedule a full meeting prior to harvest, but at this
point we are probably looking at late October for our next full
meeting. In the mean time, I hope you can take advantage of the
tailgate on Tuesday - although you might be harvesting yourself!

Happy harvest!
- Mary Lindsay

Directions to Muns Vineyard:

 From Hwy 17:
1.Head southeast on Summit Rd. (If you have come from Los Gatos, make a
right on the off-ramp and come back over the highway, then left onto
Summit Rd. If you have come from Santa Cruz, exit onto Summit Rd and
continue right.)
2. Follow Summit Rd. for 3.5 miles. Start slowing when you see the
Burrell School Winery (on the left), and just past Burrell School
3. Make a left onto Loma Prieta Ave.
4. Follow Loma Prieta Ave 2.4 mi, up the hill. You will drive through
pear orchards, and the last house you will see is at an s-curve in the
road that closely hugs the house and garden here. Continue up the hill -
the road narrows and opens out to see the view to Monterey. Drive slowly
and carefully.
5. At the 2.4 mile mark, the road will split. You want to continue
straight ahead, up the hill. This is our private road, and you will see
a sign saying 'Private Road'. The split to the right is the public road,
and at this point it flattens out. You want to be sure to continue to go
uphill here.
6. Drive .2 miles. The road will split again, and you will see our
address sign in front of you. Turn right at this split, and you will be
on our gravel drive. The road will flatten out at this point, and then
start uphill again. Continue on to and through the gate. Please park
just inside the gate, or right before it.

 From Corralitos/Soquel:
1. Take the Old San Jose-Soquel Rd. all the way up from Soquel to Summit Rd.
2. Make a left on Summit Rd.
3. Just past the Summit Market (and before Burrell School), make a
right on Loma Prieta Ave.
4. Follow the directions above from #4.

If you get 'lost' call Mary on her cell at 408-234-2079.
