The Trellis Alliance is holding a webinar this Tuesday on Smoke Taint -
free to Trellis Alliance members (and you can become a member in order
to participate in this webinar if you want). This is a timely topic,
unfortunately...

The Alliance will also be holding a conference on smoke taint November 4
(mentioned in the message below), which will include Dr. Kennison, who
has done a lot of key research from the viticulture perspective,
including the long-term and cumulative effects of smoke on vines and
fruit; the worst time for exposure (which is at veraison and the week
following). Dr. Wilkinson, who will be doing this Tuesday's webinar,
apparently will speak more about the winemaking aspect. Both Kennison
and Wilkinson have been researching for the past 6 years the effects of
smoke taint from the bush fires in Australia that are a huge problem for
the wine industry there.

The Trellis Alliance was created through UC Davis' Dept. of Vit &
Enology as a consortium for the wine industry to explore issues
affecting it. Each spring the Trellis Alliance holds an excellent
conference on Recent Advances in Viticulture & Enology (RAVE). You can
read more about the organization at
http://wineserver.ucdavis.edu/content.php?category=Trellis%20Alliance.

If you are interested in the smoke taint webinar, you'll need to contact
Kay Bogart at the Trellis Alliance about membership:

*Webinar featuring:
Dr Kerry Wilkinson, University of Adelaide
"Smoke Taint in Grapes and Wine"
Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 2:00pm

*
We know there are lots of you who would have liked to attend Dr Kerry
Wilkinson's seminar here at UC Davis, relating her research on the
effects of bushfire smoke in Australia on grapes and wine, but couldn't
make the trip due to harvest demands. So we're scheduling a FREE
webinar by Dr Wilkinson that will be broadcast from UC Davis, and can be
viewed directly from your computer at work. You don't even have to
leave your desk to participate. And your entire team can listen in, too.
It's interactive, so you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and
relate your own experiences, if you choose.
The webinar will be broadcast from the Department of Viticulture &
Enology on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009 at 2:00pm and should last about an
hour. All you have to do is log in at
https://breeze.ucdavis.edu/wilkinson2009/ at that time and you'll be in
the audience.
I've attached a copy of Dr Wilkinson's latest report to the Grape and
Wine Research & Development Corporation in January, 2009 that you can
read for background on her work. I've also attached a copy of the smoke
effects fact sheet that Dr Wilkinson co-authored with Dr Kristin
Kennison and Dr Mark Gibberd (who are both coming to UC Davis on Nov.4,
2009).
If you have any questions, please let me know at klbogart at ucdavis.edu,
530-754-9876.

Keeping you informed..............
