Jim,

In addition to the reasons outlined by Ron, WD4AHZ, I would also add that the 
contest is essentially a daytime contest.  It ends at 0159z on Saturday night 
and 2159z on Sunday night, thereby negating any late night opportunities for 
working 80m and 160m.  These early-evening shutdowns of the contest keep the 
mobiles off the road late at night and, presumably, safe.
