[Cwo] Awards

I agree.

I think CQ awards the second place winner when the first place winner gets
two. Not sure about ARRL. We might consider that as well. Again,
spreading the awards around to more folks is a good thing.

Note I did not go into the SO1R vs. SO2R discussion. I had the "pleasure"
of coming in second in round 1 to N4BAA who is SO2R and second to AA3B in
round 2 who is SO2R. To my way of thinking, I won both rounds as SO1R.

Trophies for all power categories sounds like a reasonable proposition. As
for the mounted Vibroplex bug, perhaps there's a way to get a 3D mold of a
bug (rather than a real one) that would be less costly? Personally, I like
the glass trophies a lot (even though I've never won one!). I think they are
very classy.

I think it's obvious that HP will beat LP the vast majority of the time ..
unless that HP is stuck in a valley somewhere and the LP is on the hill top.
Highly unlikely. It then follows that the most popular category is HP (which
it is).

The awards structure allow LP and QRP to compete in their own game given the
advantage of HP.
We could give a "trophy" to each power category as well as to the top winner
(virtually always HP). At this point, it isn't a cost factor to us since we
have Icom footing the bill. I can ask them, and I'm pretty sure they would
go for it. The actual cost difference is not great.

One other point: We see this year that there are only five actual award
winners out of 12 actual awards.
KS0MO, for example, won all three QRP sessions plus the combined (four wins)
but he gets only one plaque with all four wins inscribed.

BTW, speaking of the awards, last year Icom and I were talking about the
"trophy" being a mounted Vibroplex bug. That idea failed due to
cost/availability, but I still like the idea. I'm not sure how to get that
resurrected.

Whoa! Where has there been a sizably populated contest where the
low-power entrant has beaten the high-power entrants? Even in your own
example of SS, "very close" is not "equal" so there is still a substantial
bias.

If we ever get a saturation of activity, it does not follow that high power
would always win both awards. If there are 500 hundred NA participants on 20
meters during a 4-hour stint, an LP player could amass a 400 x 400 score. By
not having mults be distance related, it moves the playing field closer to
level. The reason HP players are winning, now, is because there are still
too few participants and they can pull in more mults by using spotting and
band hopping. That could all change if we start getting the numbers. So, I
would not mess with the awards structure at this point. We have seen that LP
players in SS CW can achieve scores that are very close to HP players, for
example. It all depends on turn out.

I'm re-reading the awards for the CWO and I think we should take a second
look. We give a trophy for the top score in each time period and a plaque
for the top score in each power level.

Without a doubt, the high power winner will always win the plaque and trophy
so the awards are tilted toward high power.

Do we award the high power trophy winner a plaque as well so they get two
awards? If the winner of a category gets two (trophy and plaque) then we
should award the plaque to the second place finisher in that category.

Perhaps we should reconsider and award first place in each time/power
category a trophy. Second place in each time/power category a plaque. Or
some other combination? I'm quite in favor of spreading the "bling" around
to as many as possible.

Something to consider for 2013.
