[Cwo] Fwd: CWO needs some help

Nothing new. It's only the second time. We probably
have gotten better at scoring the logs :-). Maybe next time we'll do a
real-time scoreboard. The key is that someone who can't put in a whole
weekend can choose any of three sessions and be in contention for a
trophy. If you can't put in a whole weekend in practically any
contest, you can't win squat (NA Sprint the exception). But, mentioning
that the date has changed will be a help, and it's another reminder that
the contest is coming up soon.

That's a good plan, Rob.

I'll mention that the contest was moved this year -
other than that is there something new about it or the awards
or...???

Ward,

Over 2000 emails went out to well-known contesters in JA, EU, US, CA,
SA inviting them to participate in CW Open, with a reminder sent to each
this week. A JA friend told me he saw a lot of buzz about the event on
bulletin boards and reflectors. So, by moving the date and doing a lot of
advanced publicity, we're expecting to have quite a turnout this year.

Ward is trying to help and I understand his situation. I'm not the
brightest lamp when it comes to "sizzle" ;-)

Any thoughts?

Please respond to me and/or the group, not Ward directly if possible.

Tks, Alan AD6E

Well...OK. I can note that the CWO has moved. But
give me a little more sizzle :-)

I understand .. how about "new weekend"? or "new
dates"?

That by itself is probably sufficient to warrant a second look.

Thanks !!

Alan, about the most I ever do for contest promotion
is run it as a headline or if there is some kind of "news" about
it - such as a new category or plaque program or something other than
"hey, it's running this weekend". I would be happy to put CWO on
the "leaderboard" by the way. I avoid doing single-contest
promotions (with the hopefully understandable exception of the newsletter
sponsor's contests and I keep those down to a dull roar, too) because
there are hundreds of contests that would then want THEIR contest promoted
and so forth.

Come up with something neat about CWO - new
certificates, website update, real-time scoreboard somewhere - and I'll
put a short item in the news section to keep the wheels turning. How's
that?

Ward,

I'm hoping you can help get more activity for the upcoming CW OPEN Sept
1-2.

You have it listed in the Contest Corral, and I appreciate it. I'm really
nervous about this event since last year was bombed by two other heavy
hitter CW events going on at the same time in AS and in EU. That's why we
moved it to Sept 1-2 for this year.

CWO is NOT the biweekly CWT events that have been going on for a long time
now. It's the "real deal" where all that practice is now on the
line for an actual trophy and glory. Last years' result writeup can be
found here:

http://www.cwops.org/cwo2011-final.html

Folks need to be reminded that the exchange is Serial NR and Name

The CWT has a different, although similar exchange which is Name and CWops
membership NR. No membership (or number) is needed in CWO.

My little writeup (PDF) on that results page shows what the sun is doing
in each of the three four hour events.

This is a different competition than the usual: Three separate events of
four hours each separated by 4 hours. The propagation changes
significantly between each session. Let me know if you want those little
JPGs.

Last year saw mostly NA activity with very little elsewhere. I REALLY want
to make this a world wide event. K6RB has been sending out email reminders
which I hope work out. Your next issue of Contest Update (Aug 29?) would
be perfectly timed to help CW OPEN.

Thanks & 73, Alan AD6E
