Texas ARDF and the Houston Orienteering Club (HOC) will be sponsoring
the 2008 United States Amateur Radio Direction Finding Championships
May 9-11, 2008 in Bastrop, Texas. Bastrop is 30 miles east-southeast of
Austin, Texas in an area known as the "Lost Pines". The event is open to
anyone - there is no previous ARDF experience required, nor are competitors
required to have an amateur radio license. Friday will feature a practice
session and competitors meeting. Saturday will be the 144 MHz competition,
and Sunday will be the 3.5 MHz competition. As they become available, more
details, including registration costs, rules, detailed schedules, and more
will be presented here and on the Texas ARDF email reflector.

This is the weekend before the weekend of the Dayton Hamvention. We
had considered several weekends in April and May, but after considering
all the potential conflicts, and a need to avoid the breeding season of an
endangered species of toad native to the competition area, May 9-11 is
the best fit for us. As it happens, this is also the National Foxhunting
Weekend for 2008.

We are planning to organize our event much like the 2006 USA ARDF
Championships, with competitors providing their own transportation and
lodging to a Friday-Saturday-Sunday event. We are working on identifying
a "recommended" hotel, possibly with a group rate - stay tuned. Many,
many more details are to come.

On behalf of Jen W5JEN, Joe Moell K0OV, the USA ARDF Coordinator, and
myself, we hope everyone will consider a trip to the Lone Star State next
May for ARDF in the Lost Pines.
