I fail to see why it is necessary to go to all this trouble with
protractors and azimuths.

1) point whatever ARDF unit you are using at the transmitter. You are
now facing the transmitter.
2) align (orient - that's why it's called orienteering) your map to
magnetic north.
3) draw a line from you to the transmitter. (assuming you know where
"you" are, but all methods assume that.)

I do this for the same reason I use a thumb compass.. It reduces the
problem to it's most basic. The KISS method. No bearings, no azimuths,
no protractors. I can't even take a bearing with my thumb compass.

Most of the time I don't even draw the line. I rely on memory, as in
"I think #2 is on the south side of that hill."
