IARU Region 2 has been asked to provide one or two International
Jurors for the upcoming World ARDF Championships in the Czech Republic
this September. If you are interested in serving as a juror, please
let me know as soon as possible. The first decision on the number of
jurors we can guarantee needs to be made early next week, the actual
naming of the jurors may wait until the results of the US National
ARDF Championships are in and the team members have been named.
Candidates must be from IARU Region 2 and be familiar with ARDF.
Preference will be given to those who have attended a juror training.
(Training will be provided for those who need it.)
If your availability as a juror depends on other circumstances
(like whether you are selected for the national team) them please
make that clear.
Jurors require tact, diplomacy, fairness, and the ability to
tolerate boredom and tedious nitpicking discussions. According
to the ARDF rules in Region 1, all jurors must be fluent in
English (though degrees of fluency may vary!) The role of the
jury is to see that the competition is fair and the rules are
followed. In most cases this will involved sitting at one of
the transmitters (for several hours) watching the competitors
and perhaps copying down their numbers as they arrive. After
each competition the Jury meets to discuss the event, address
any questions or complaints (for example, a competitor may be
disqualified for following someone else, or for giving unfair
help to a teammate) and officially approve the results. Some
jurors also serve at the start and finish lines.
Jurors are honored guests of the host society, and are
usually provided free lodging and meals. However, each
juror is responsible for her/his own travel expenses to and
from the event, including airfare.
Having a spouse or other family member competing does not
disqualify someone from being a juror - we expect you to
treat everyone fairly. But if there is a decision where you
feel you have a clear conflict of interest, you can abstain
from the discussion and vote.
If you are still interested after reading all this, or if
you have further questions, please let me know by email
(wb6byu at arrl.net).
Looking forward to hearing from you!
