Looking for a way to have fun, provide a public service, and train yourself for the USA ARDF Championships at the end of July? Consider going to Big Bend National Park in Texas to help track Mexican Long-Nosed Bats.

Bat Conservation International is looking for about a dozen physically-fit volunteers from June 23 to July 11. They'll hike through the park with RDF gear during the night, collecting signal data on about two dozen radio-tagged bats. BCI will provide training, food, lodging, and equipment, but if you have your own RDF gear for 149-152 MHz, you are encouraged to bring it.

The research facility bunkhouse has one telephone line, if it's working, and it's an hour's drive away from cell phone range. So it would be a great opportunity for hams to set up some HF and/or VHF communications for the crew. What a place for Field Day!

More information about this and two other new wildlife-tracking projects can be found at my Web site: www.homingin.com

BCI is compiling its volunteer roster right now, so don't delay.
