About Virtual Viticulture Academy:
Vineyard consultant Fritz Westover
started VVA earlier this year as an
interactive platform to provide expert
viticulture information to growers. He
worked with the Vineyard Team for a
couple of years recently managing
their viticulture and research
programs. He now consults with growers
across 6 states with more than 1500
acres of vines. Fritz holds a BS in
horticulture from Penn State
University as well as an MS from the
Penn State Department of Plant
Pathology. Prior to founding Westover
Vineyard Advising, Fritz worked both
internationally and across the US in a
variety of viticulture related roles
including positions with the Texas
A&M AgriLife Extension Service,
Virginia Tech, and the Vineyard Team.
He also speaks on a variety
of viticulture topics across the
country, contributes industry articles
to publications such as <a

Quick Tips from the Virtual

care:

~ Your soil's chemical makeup
directly impacts the nutrients
available to your vines and the
effectiveness of your fertilization
program. This is why I strongly
encourage growers to collect soil
samples about every 3 years in
addition to annual tissue sampling.
Post harvest is a great time to
sample soil and send off to the lab.
Sampling methods may differ for
young and old vineyards and for drip
irrigated verses dry farmed

that your vine leaves stay green and

providing enough irrigation to keep
roots hydrated (12-24 inches down).
Premature leaf drop reduces vine
